Northampton General Hospital (NGH) has gone live with an electronic patient record (EPR) system developed by Nervecentre.

The system, which went live on on 28 June 2025, will replace patient records which were previously stored in a mix of paper files and digital systems, with a central platform.

William Monaghan, group chief digital information officer at both the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire and University Hospitals of Leicester, said: ā€œThis is a pivotal moment for NGH and our patients.

ā€œThe new EPR system puts essential information at our clinical teams’ fingertips, helping them deliver safer, more coordinated care.

ā€œI’m incredibly proud of how our colleagues have embraced this change – they’ve worked tirelessly to prepare for this transition.

ā€œWhile there may be a few teething problems as we go live, this investment in digital infrastructure will transform how we work, giving our teams more time to focus on what matters most: caring for patients.ā€

NGH selectedĀ NervecentreĀ asĀ its preferred supplierĀ in December 2023 beforeĀ signing a 10-year contractĀ in July 2024 to implement the EPR system.

It is hoped the EPR will enable staff to view the latest medical information instantly, spend less time on administration and more time with patients, avoid asking patients to repeat their history multiple times, improve coordination between departments and services, and keep patient information secure.

The technology is also intended to help improve patient safety by highlighting clinical alerts, such as allergies, and providing a clear, audible record of care.

Paul Volkaerts, chief executive at Nervecentre, said: “I’m thrilled that the first phase of the EPR deployment at Northampton General Hospital has been a success.

“It is a truly remarkable achievement that this happened within twelve months of contract signature and just a few days after our PAS go-live in Leicester.

“The team at NGH must be congratulated for catapulting the trust into an extremely high level of digital maturity for its inpatient services, which is a testament to their dedication, commitment and collaborative approach to the deployment.”

Although the EPR is only being introduced for use within NGH, it complements the Northamptonshire Care Record, a wider initiative that allows health and care professionals across the county to view shared health information, including from GP practices.

Training for staff is underway to support a smooth transition, with the hospital working closely with teams across the organisation to make sure the EPR system is embedded safely and effectively.

The go-live date of the EPR at NHG was first announced in early June 2025. It followed an announcement from East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, which signed a 10-year contractĀ with Nervecentre to implement its cloud-native EPR system.
