United Lincolnshire goes paper-free in maternity wards with System C

United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust has moved off paper records in its two main maternity wards after going live with System C’s Medway Maternity software.

The clinical system is being rolled out in a ā€œphasedā€ deployment over nine months at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston and Lincoln County Hospital, as well as five ā€œsatelliteā€ clinics and a number of community sites in Lincolnshire.

Upon completion, System C Medway Maternity will help capture a complete record of maternal, foetal and newborn care for some 5,000 babies born annually in the county.

United Lincolnshire Hospitals is also deploying a Medway Maternity system that works offline in rural areas with poor connectivity. Using this system, community midwives can collect and upload data into forms which then automatically syncs with patient record once an internet connection becomes available.

Rebekah Calladine, matron for the community midwives and antenatal clinic, said: ā€œThe main benefits that stand out to me are that data relating to the quality and volume of the work we do is easily reported and readily available and we are now offering care in a safer way than ever. We are so proud of how much progress we have made.ā€

ToĀ date,Ā nearlyĀ 10,000Ā pregnanciesĀ andĀ 5092Ā birthsĀ haveĀ beenĀ recordedĀ onĀ theĀ system, System C claimed.

United Lincolnshire Hospitals is also using System C’s Medway Maternity Business Intelligence software to help improve the quality of clinical data it records.

MichaelĀ Humber,Ā associateĀ directorĀ ofĀ ICT/CIOĀ ofĀ UnitedĀ LincolnshireĀ HospitalsĀ NHSĀ Trust, said: ā€œTheĀ qualityĀ andĀ quantityĀ ofĀ theĀ dataĀ we’veĀ beenĀ ableĀ toĀ submitĀ asĀ partĀ ofĀ theĀ mandatoryĀ Maternity ServicesĀ DataĀ SetĀ (MSDS)Ā hasĀ increasedĀ significantly,Ā withĀ aĀ numberĀ of benefitsĀ includingĀ improvedĀ processesĀ inĀ termsĀ ofĀ providingĀ dataĀ forĀ PaymentĀ byĀ Results.

ā€œWeĀ haveĀ beenĀ consistentlyĀ scoringĀ high,Ā andĀ recentlyĀ hitĀ 10/10Ā forĀ theĀ ClinicalĀ NegligenceĀ SchemeĀ forĀ TrustsĀ assessmentĀ criteria.ā€

Including the latest deployment in Lincolnshire, SystemĀ C’sĀ MedwayĀ MaternityĀ systemĀ isĀ used inĀ 23Ā NHSĀ maternityĀ unitsĀ across Britain.

Markus Bolton, System C’s joint CEO, said: ā€œUnited Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust should be proud of the improvements it has made to its maternity care record.Ā  The trust and System C have work ed hard to make it happen and it’s great to see it reaping the rewards.ā€
