East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust has become the first trust in the UK to adopt the Dedalus ORBIS U electronic patient record (EPR).

ORBIS U enables patient information, including medical history, diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, allergies, radiology images and laboratory test results to be digitised across the trust’s four hospitals: Lister, New QEII, Hertford County and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.

Dedalus’ cloud-ready EPR system consists of more than 40 integrated clinical modules that cover all processes within the daily business of healthcare providers, supporting decision-making, faster diagnoses and better patient support.

Mark Stanton, chief information officer at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Foundation Trust, said: ā€œDeploying ORBIS U as our EPR is a major undertaking for the trust and a key component of our digital transformation.

ā€œWe chose to stay with Dedalus as ORBIS U is a significant upgrade on our existing EPR solution and can be adapted to our needs.ā€

It is hoped the EPR will improve efficiency and process optimisation, provide more robust data security and help streamline communications within the trust.

Roxana Bostina, chief clinical information officer at East and North Herts, added: ā€œORBIS U will give us a comprehensive patient record, built on real time data, which will in turn enable us to transform patient flow, standardise processes and reduce waste.ā€

In March 2022, Dedalus announced it would cease offering the Lorenzo EPR and switch to ORBIS.

ORBIS U is the next generation of ORBIS. Over a thousand installations of ORBIS have been completed throughout Europe according to Dedalus, including in the NHS, most notably at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.

The trust adopted the Lorenzo EPR system in 2017 after initially signing a contract for it through a national programme, which ended in 2022. The contract with Dedalus was then renewed in 2022 through to July 2025 following the switch to ORBIS, with the partnership now extended further following the adoption of ORBIS U.

Daryll Goodall, regional managing director of UK and Ireland at Dedalus, said: “We are delighted to begin this collaborative endeavour with East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, which shares our passion for delivering affordable excellence in healthcare.

ā€œTogether, we believe that the powerful ORBIS U system will streamline processes, bolster decision making, and, ultimately, result in better patient experiences and care.”
